Massive Attack open up Barclaycard presents BST Hyde Park!
Heading up the first show of the festival was Massive Attack, who were welcomed onto the Great Oak Stage by a double rainbow and took crowds by storm with their incredible stage show and visuals. Robert ‘3D’ Del Naja announced that the band was “honoured” to be following such an amazing line up, before bringing out special guest the “enigmatic” Azekel and trip-hop artist and long-time collaborator Tricky, making this their first ever UK performance together.
However the biggest surprise of the evening was an unexpected appearance from roots reggae legend and wheelchair-bound Horace Andy, who escaped his stay in hospital especially for this performance! He was wheeled off stage by Daddy G shouting “Right, straight back to the hospital!”
For their encore, Massive Attack brought out a full chamber orchestra for their euphoric track 'Unfinished Sympathy' - which saw a huge banner in lights appear stating the topical words “We are all in this together”.
TV on the Radio warmed up the crowd beautifully in the late afternoon, and Patti Smith blew fans away in the main arena with her reading of Allen Ginsberg’s iconic poem “Footnote to Howl” before beginning her explosive set. Ghostpoet followed shortly by Warpaint, both rocked out over on the Barclaycard Stage.
